Visma to support youth cycling with Team Jumbo-Visma Talent Academy

Visma is proud to announce that it will sponsor Team Jumbo-Visma Talent Academy – a new youth cycling program aiming to inspire youth through local communities, schools and cycling clubs.

The TJV Talent Academy is a new initiative by Team Jumbo-Visma, sponsored by Visma and the Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo. Its mission is to foster young cycling talents, increase the interest in cycling among young people and promote the benefits of physical activity.

“We aim to create a sustainable cycling program where we inspire people to join sports and develop talents on their way to the top – contributing to building a healthier and more active society,” said Richard Plugge, Director of Team Jumbo-Visma.

Connecting young people to the sport of cycling

Collaboration with local communities, schools and cycling clubs are essential stepping stones in realising the full youth plan. The initiative sheds light on important issues such as rising health costs, an increase in obesity among young people and a decrease in sports and cycling participation among youth in the Netherlands.

“By focusing on grass-root activities, we hope to connect young people to the sport of cycling from the ground up. A wide range of activities in local communities all over the Netherlands, aiming to inspire and attract young people to the sport at an early stage, will be part of the program, ” Plugge continued.

Innovative digital activities such as VR cycling and stationary bike competitions with television screens will be part of engaging young people in the program. More traditional cycling activities, aiming to get youth familiar with bicycles, will be organised in collaboration with teachers in selected schools.

Developing young cycling talents

The TJV Talent Academy is divided into two parts. One focuses on grass root activities, promoting activities in schools, cycling clubs and local communities. The second part is the Development/CX team, which consists of 10-16 youth riders working together with a dedicated team from Team Jumbo-Visma.

The youth riders, aged between 18 and 23 years old, will benefit from a performance program led by the highly skilled development team following the same principles as the World Tour Team.

Important initiative for Visma

Visma recently joined the world of pro cycling after becoming the title sponsor of Team Jumbo-Visma together with Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo. Now, the two sponsors will support Team Jumbo-Visma’s new youth program as an extended part of the sponsorship.

“We are excited to take part in such an important and inspiring initiative. As a large corporation, we believe it is our responsibility to contribute positively to the societies where we operate. By supporting the new youth program, we take part in promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging sports participation among young people, issues that are close to our heart in Visma” said Visma CEO Øystein Moan.

The youth cycling program will be rolled out during 2019.
